The measured fluid must be a conductive liquid or slurry. When its conductivity is less than 50 μS/cm, double-core double-shielded wire or high-frequency converter with equipotential shielding can be used. The measured fluid should not contain more ferromagnetic substances or bubbles. Appropriate pressure level, lining materials, electrode materials and instrument structure should be selected according to the characteristics of the measured fluid.
Selection principle

Selection of Path
1. Because the electromagnetic flowmeter has a high range of 1500:1, the diameter of the instrument is usually the same as that of the process pipeline.
2. If the measured medium contains solid particles, the flow rate of the recommend is 1~3 m/s. If the actual flow rate is too large and it is inconvenient to change, the diameter of the optional instrument is larger than that of the process pipeline, so as to appropriately reduce the fluid flow rate of the pipe section measured by the flowmeter and reduce the wear of the particles on the electrode and the lining.
3. If there may be sediment in the process pipeline, the recommend flow rate is 2~5 m/s. If the actual flow rate is too small and it is inconvenient to change the process pipeline, the optional instrument diameter is smaller than the process pipeline diameter to appropriately increase the fluid flow rate of the flowmeter and avoid the impact of sediment on the accuracy of the instrument.
4,. If the flow rate is too small and requires high accuracy measurement, a sensor smaller than the diameter of the process pipe can be selected to increase the flow rate and ensure high accuracy.
Under the conditions of 2, 3 and 4 above, reducers shall be installed at the upper and lower reaches of the flowmeter. The central cone angle of the reducer shall not be greater than 15 °, and there shall be a straight pipe section upstream of the reducer at least 5 times the diameter of the process pipe.
To assist in the selection, the following table lists the flows for several representative flow rates. The corresponding flow rate of any flow rate can also be calculated quickly by using this table: if the flow rate value Q(m3/h) is known, and the corresponding flow rate value Q of 1 m/s flow rate under the corresponding path is found in the table, then the corresponding flow rate V = Q/Q1( m/s).
